Design taste is the new moat for AI startups
Andrej Karpathy coined "vibe coding" in February 2025 to describe building software by describing what you want and letting AI handle the implementation. A year later, the term defined a category worth billions. Solo founders ship MVPs in days. Non-technical founders build products without writing a line of code by hand. The barrier to building has never been lower.
That means the barrier to building something good has never been higher.
When everyone has access to the same models, the same prompt patterns, and the same app builders, the output converges. I noticed this pattern in my own work and wrote about it in The best AI tools are boring — the tools that win are the ones that disappear. But the products that win? They are the ones that do not look like they were built by the same machine as everything else.

What is design taste in AI products?
Design taste in AI products is the judgment to know what should exist and what should not. It is not about picking fonts or color palettes. It is about deciding which feature to cut, which interaction to simplify, and when the generated output is good enough versus when it needs a human redirection. Adobe's design team made this case cleanly: AI removes the friction of the blank page, but the creator who wins is the one who edits with the keenest eye. Taste is what turns generated output into a product people want to use.
Why does design taste matter more in 2026?
Because technical execution is being commoditized. A solo founder with Cursor and Claude can build in a weekend what took a team of three a month in 2023. That speed is incredible — but it also means the market is flooding with functional but forgettable products. The apps that survive are the ones that feel intentional. They make deliberate choices about microcopy, pacing, information hierarchy, and what happens when something goes wrong. These are taste decisions. They are also the hardest things to prompt your way into.
How do AI UIs all start to look the same?
AI tools are trained on existing patterns. When you ask an LLM to generate a landing page or a dashboard, it averages all the landing pages and dashboards it has seen. The result is competent but generic — clean layout, standard navigation, safe copy. Nothing offensive, nothing memorable. Multiply this by thousands of founders using the same tools with similar prompts, and you get a web full of products that look like they share a parent. The brands that stand out are the ones that override the default. They make choices the model would not make on its own.
How do you develop design taste as a solo builder?
Three things actually work. First, curate a reference set that is narrow and specific — not "good design" but "onboarding flows I wish I built." Save them, label them, and revisit them before you start your own work. Second, write down why each choice in your product exists. If you cannot explain why a button is blue or why your pricing page lists features in a particular order, the model made that decision for you. Third, ship and look at what you shipped with honest eyes. The gap between what you intended and what you built is where taste grows. No model can close that gap for you.
