A workflow compression is a product that takes a repetitive, text-heavy task people already do manually and makes it dramatically faster without changing the underlying behavior. The job stays the same. The time and cost drop. The unit of value is brutal and simple: compress five hours of a $100-an-hour professional's week and you have created $500 a week of return.
This is why the best AI ideas feel obvious in hindsight. Nobody has to be taught why the task matters. A support manager already knows tickets are expensive. A recruiter already knows sourcing eats the week. The product does not change their life's goal; it shortens the part they hate.

Compressions win because the demand already exists. Invented behavior — a brand-new way of doing something — has to be sold, taught, and trusted, all at once. A compression only has to be sold. The user already knows the problem, so they skip the education phase and go straight to the payoff.
Paul Graham has argued this point for two decades in How to Get Startup Ideas: nearly all good startup ideas are narrow and deep — something a small group wants urgently, not something a large group is mildly interested in. He calls made-up ideas "sitcom ideas" because they sound plausible in a pitch but no real user needs them. How do you find a compression to build?
Start with a role, not a market. Pick one specific person — a recruiter, an ecommerce operations lead, a support manager — and list the tasks they repeat weekly that are painful, text-heavy, and still handled in docs, spreadsheets, or Slack. The idea is the task with the loudest grumbling.
Proof of pain is public. Reddit threads, job descriptions, review-site complaints, and community forums all surface the same repetitive work as recurring frustration. If the same complaint shows up from multiple people doing the same job, you have a compression. Prototype the single highest-value step first — the moment a user would pay to never do that step manually again — and charge before you add features.
Why does specificity beat scope for solo founders?
One person cannot maintain a suite, but one person can dominate one workflow. Stripe's analysis of top-performing solo founders found the top decile was about twice as likely as the median to be building AI-native products, and those AI-native startups generated nearly twice the revenue by their two-year mark. The gap was not a handful of outliers; the middle of the distribution outperformed too.
The compression is also the moat. Every customer's usage trains your prompts, templates, and guardrails on the actual workflow. That proprietary data, plus trust inside a niche, outlasts any model. The model is a commodity. The compressed workflow is not — it is the accumulated understanding of the job itself.
So stop asking what AI can do. Ask what a specific person does by hand every week and wishes they did not. That question produces the ideas. AI just makes the answer buildable.
